Aix-Marseille University Sustainable Food Systems and Diets 2013

The body uses only a part of the food and nutrients it ingests. In other words, they are bio available – available to the body – to differing degrees. For example, the haem iron in animal products is 2 to 4 times more bio available than non-haem iron which is to be found in vegetable products. Special attention should therefore be paid to the nutritional suitability of the sustainable diets, particularly taking into account the varying bio availablity of nutrients. This is the subject of a project from the University of Aix-Marseilles in the South of France. The university’s special research unit NORT (nutrition, obesity, and risk of thrombosis) is conducting the project. It seeks to analyze the compatibility between reducing environmental impacts and maintaining the nutritional suitability of food stuffs with respect to the bio availability of certain key nutrients.

Following the first selection round for projects in the "Ecosystems, Agriculture and Diets” category in the partnership with the Fondation de France, the Daniel and Nina Carasso Foundationis to fund the following organizations and projects:

- French National Agronomic Research Institute (INRA), the SAD-Paysag Unit: Local buckwheat: participatory research project to widen the diversity of buckwheat crops and improve the agronomic performance, the ecosystem input of crops, and the quality of produce for organic and small-scale farming.
- French Technology Institute for Organic Farming (ITAB): Technical guide and forum for sharing experience on organic market gardens.
- Toits vivants(Living Roofs): Participatory urban agriculture project on roofs and terraces.
- Languedoc-Roussillon Regional Federation ofCentres for Initiatives to Revive Agriculture and Rural Areas (CIVAM): Towards sustainable agriculture and food systems in Mediterranean farmland in South-East France: foster a local dynamic in the management of soil fertility and water resources.
- Organic Farming Research Group (GRAB): Interactions between land and varieties in organic farming (INTERVABIO).
- Fondation Terres de Liens (Earth Links Foundation): Define and evaluate the social usefulness of the Terre de Liens Foundation: analyzeits contribution to the social, economic, and environmental challenges of the land.

Call for project "Susfood" Sustainable Food Systems and Diets 2013

In the scope of the european ERA-NET Susfood call for project, the Foundation supports several french, spanish and italian research units involved in 2 european research project :

  • Sunniva, led by Nofima AS,  Norway and gathering 19 partners in 7 countries. The Foundation supports french, spanish and italian partners involved in this project, which aim at the development of a sustainable food system from production to consumption, addressing the entire food supply chain for the vegetables tomato and cabbage, and their derived products. The project will increase consumers’ access to safe, healthy and convenient food through novel processing techniques and better utilization of raw material, by-products and waste, for which valorization strategies will be developed.
  • Susdiet, led by INRA Aliss, France and gathering 15 partners in 9 countries. The Foundation supports french, spanish and italian partners. There is a broad agreement on the need to identify and facilitate the adoption of more sustainable diets in Europe. However, controversy remains over the sustainability properties of alternatives diets and policy efforts to effect changes in food consumption have had so far only limited effectiveness. The proposal aims at overcoming some of these limitations by identifying clear dietary targets and the mix of policy instruments capable of ensuring their adoption by the EU population.

Gret Sustainable Food Systems and Diets 2013

Malnutrition is a serious public health problem that has historically affected countries from the South and now, increasingly, the North. The Foundation is funding a project undertaken by French non-profit development organization, GRET. It seeks to diagnose problems of malnutrition in the area round the city of Neversin central France using know-how drawn chiefly from experience in the countries of the South. This methodology transfer should help to cast a fresh light on the issues at stake and perhaps open new avenues.

International Urban Food Network Sustainable Food Systems and Diets 2013
 
International Urban Food Network (IUFN) is an international network of research and cooperation on sustainable urban food governance. Officially launched in 2012, it aims to strengthen cooperation between the authorities and the scientific community. The Daniel and Nina Carasso Foundation supports the launch of the internet IUFN platform, the creation of a documentary background, the development of papers and support, and a campaign among professionals of urban food governance .

Passerelle info Sustainable Food Systems and Diets 2013
 
The Daniel and Nina Carasso Foundation supports the Passerelle info association for the deployment of a nutrition education program for children 3 to 8 years in schools, to develop a training module for teachers and for producing an impact assessment of the overall program.

Bioversity International Sustainable Food Systems and Diets 2012

Research project: The study of food systems has developed recently and there are still few appropriate indicators approved by the scientific community to measure systems’ sustainability. The Foundation supports the work of a research group from Bioversity International (which is a member of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research - CGIAR). It seeks to draw up a set of sustainable food indicators that will serve as a common language indispensable to communication between researchers, to the comparative study of systems, and to the capitalization of research.

Campus Condorcet Sustainable Food Systems and Diets 2012

The Daniel and Nina Carasso Foundation supports the Campus Condorcet Foundation whose purpose is to prepare and organize the transfer of Paris’s main social science universities to Aubervilliers, a working class suburb of the French capital. There will eventually be 9,000 international researchers and 5,000 students based there. A series of workshops will bring together different stakeholders and experts who will examine and design an innovative system of mass catering for the future Condorcet University. In more general terms, they will rethink the question of food and diets in an open, multicultural ecosystem.

Censfood Sustainable Food Systems and Diets 2012

A centennial flood in the village of Ang in the Indian region of Ladakh destroyed the irrigation canals. The Foundation’s first response to the emergency was to fund the rebuilding of the canals. The second stage was to build a protection enclosure around the farm- and tree-land and to restore the waterway banks.

Endat Sustainable Food Systems and Diets 2012

ENDAT is a voluntary group. Its name is a French-language acronym that stands for Nutritional Education for Diabetics and Assistance for Eating Disorders. The Foundation funds an ENDAT project to fight obesity non-medically, through social, dietary, psychological, economic and family-related support activities.

Montpellier SupAgro (Higher Institute of Agronomy in Montpellier): UNESCO “World Food Systems” Chair Sustainable Food Systems and Diets 2012

Flagship Project: The UNESCO Chair for “World Food Systems” seeks to facilitate collaborative work between French teachers and researchers and their international counterparts. The stress is on a multidisciplinary approach that brings together biotechnical and social sciences as part of an effort to promote sustainable farming and food systems. It aims simultaneously to:

  • Study – from a sustainable development perspective – the dynamics of food systems across the world and how they affect human beings and the environment.
  • Groom future scientists and policy makers through amaster’s degree from Montpellier SupAgro  in “Innovations and Policies for Sustainable Food”.
  • Share knowledge by organizing and leading conferences and debates between scientists, politicians, the business community, and the general public.

The earthquake that struck Haition 12 January 2010 changed the face of its capital city, Port-au-Prince. Many public and private buildings were destroyed. The international aid effort focused on the immediate humanitarian emergency – more than a million homeless. The Daniel and Nina Carasso Foundation’s first response was to contribute to the emergency aid supplied by the Fondation de France’s Haiti Committee. Wishing to continue its aid effort on a long-term footing, it chose to fund an “Art in the Community” project. It partnered with Fokal (Knowledge and Freedom Foundation), a local organization that is very active in the arts and culture, choosing to rebuild the Centre d’Art which was razed to the ground by the earthquake. The Centre does important work in artistic training and promoting Haitian painting. The two foundations’ first step was to make the site safe and to carry out a feasibility study for the design of the new Centre d’Art.

Hamadori Nominren Sustainable Food Systems and Diets 2012

In the wake of the earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan on 11 March 2011, the Foundation is creating a project in Soma to open and manage a shop that supplies vegetables untainted by radioactivity to the inhabitants of Fukushima. The project is also putting in place a venue for sharing experience and information, called the Café Sanchoku. Funding is channeled through the Japan Solidarity Committee of the Fondation de France.

Restaurants du Cœur Sustainable Food Systems and Diets 2012

Restaurants du Cœur is a non-profit association that feeds the needy through food baskets distribution, soup kitchens and by distributing food parcels. The Foundation support edits 2012-2013 winter campaign in Paris, funding 264,000 meals for 2,200 people over a period of 4 months. The Foundation also financed an employment and social inclusion project in the Parisian suburbs where socially excluded people made meal trays for Restaurants du Coeur’s 2012-2013 winter campaign.

Unis Cité Sustainable Food Systems and Diets 2012

Partnered by the Daniel and Nina Carasso Foundation, the non-profit association Unis Cité runs a nationwide project to prevent child obesity in working-class areas. Called the “Les Vitaminés”, it uses afternoon snack time as an opportunity to guide 6-11 year-olds and their parents towards a healthy diet and active lifestyle. In its first phase, funded by other partners, 32 civic service volunteers took part in a 6-month experimental project in four pilot towns: Niort, Mantes-la-Jolie, Valenciennes and Strasbourg. Encouraged by the pilot schemes’ positive results, the Foundation is backing the extension of the programme to more French towns and cities.

Fundación SHE (Foundation for Science, Health, and Education) Sustainable Food Systems and Diets 2011

Flagship project: Following the highly successful project in Colombia led by Dr. Fuster (president of the SHE Foundation) to raise children’s awareness of food and diets and in response to the issue of overweight and obesity in Spain, the SHE Foundation is undertaking a similar project. Funded by the Daniel and Nina Carasso Foundation and working in collaboration with autonomous governments of (Catalonia, Galicia, and Madrid), it is conducting an awareness campaign in primary and secondary schools. Called “Salud Integral!” (Whole Health, or SI! for short), it seeks to evaluate scientifically the impact of this innovative method of awareness-raising based on emotion, children’s dietary behaviour, and physical exercise. It may also seek to share and disseminate the method if shown to be effective. In parallel, 26 episodes of Sesame Street were broadcast on Spanish national TV as an entertaining way to sensitize children to the issues of diet and physical exercise.
